Business Investment Program to Increase Access to Child Care

Business Investment Program to Increase Access to Child Care

Le Mars, along with the rest of Plymouth County, is experiencing a child care shortage. In the past 5 years, Plymouth County has experienced a 45% decrease in the number of child care programs, from 73 in 2013 to 40 in 2018. Additionally, Plymouth County has seen a 7% decrease in the number of child care spaces, from 1,015 to 982. During the same period, the number of children ages 0-5 has increased 1% identifying the continued need for quality child care businesses. The Le Mars United Way awarded Mid-Sioux Opportunity funding for a Business Investment Program to help increase the number of Registered Child Development Homes throughout Plymouth County.

Child Care Resource and Referral is one of many programs offered through Mid-Sioux Opportunity and works directly with child care businesses to increase access and quality of care for families. Child Care Resource and Referral is currently taking applications for the Business Investment Program. The Business Investment Program is intended to promote child care as a business, remove barriers to operating a child care business and to encourage continuous quality improvement for the care of children. Each child care business can qualify for up to $500. Child care businesses will be reimbursed to complete steps towards becoming a registered Child Development Home, which includes completing: Essentials Preservice Series Training; Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Training; CPR/First Aid; and submitting a completed Child Development Home Registration application.
