October 2024 | Volume 36; Issue 1

From the Executive Director's Desk

October is the first month of the agency fiscal year as well as the beginning of the federal fiscal year. Congress has passed a Continuing Resolution which funds the government through December 20th to avoid a government shutdown. Fiscal staff have been diligently closing out FY’24 contracts while also preparing FY’25 budgets. Thank you to Tammy Nilles, Shannon Hofmann, and the Project Directors for their dedication to ensuring our agency upholds fiscal responsibility while fulfilling grant requirements.

Our LiHEAP and Outreach staff have faced the challenge of learning two new database systems this month. A huge shoutout to Laura Benson and her staff for their patience and understanding as we navigate the implementation of these databases. As with any new database system, challenges are expected; however, the rapid development and implementation of these systems has led to additional issues. The staff’s adaptability during the transition has been greatly appreciated.

It is hard to believe the Holiday season is right around the corner! Staff will be managing seasonal activities like Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas gift distributions, preparing the agency annual audit, etc. all while continuing to serve clients and meet daily job requirements. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff to successfully manage all these tasks!

As the harvest season comes to a close, I hope you all take the time to enjoy the beauty of the autumn leaves and the refreshing fall temperatures.

Respectfully,

Cindy Harpenau

Executive Director

NOW INTRODUCING: MID-SIOUX CORE VALUES

The Mid-Sioux Board of Directors recently unanimously approved the acceptance of agency core values. These values represent the qualities we want our staff to possess, and the way we serve the families in our communities. The values will slowly be integrated into many facets of our organization.

HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START

Head Start, Early Head Start and the Child Development Center provide services for pregnant women and children to age five. These programs assist children and families to prepare for kindergarten by supporting their development in physical, cognitive, social, and emotional areas. Head Start, Early Head Start and the Child Development Center works with families to support their children's learning and success at home and in school.

Individualizing for each child's unique needs is essential for fostering their growth and development. Both the High Scope curriculum in center-based and the Parents as Teachers curriculum in home-based programs are designed to support early childhood development. Teachers and home visitors collect information through on-going observation, recording and evaluation of each child’s growth and development utilizing the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment.

Holiday Food Program

We are excited to announce that applications for our Holiday Food Program are now open. This initiative is designed to equip households with all the essentials needed to prepare a festive Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. In addition to the Holiday Food Program, we encourage everyone to take advantage of our regular food pantry services available at the Cherokee Outreach office. Clients are welcome to visit once every 30 days to receive a sack of groceries, with the pantry operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. We invite anyone to apply for the Holiday Food Program and visit the Cherokee Food Pantry for ongoing assistance.

Cherokee Police Department-Mid-Sioux Partnership

The Cherokee Police Department has partnered with Mid-Sioux Outreach to ensure that 100 children in Cherokee County experience the joy of Christmas, even when circumstances might otherwise prevent it. For families who may not be able to participate in this specific program, the Mid-Sioux Holiday Gift Program is available for those seeking additional support.

Holiday Gift Program

As we begin working on the Holiday Gift Program, letters will be sent out to families wishing to be sponsored for the upcoming holiday season. Additionally, sponsorship letters are mailed to community organizations, churches, and families in the community that wish to sponsor a family for the holidays - and we are still accepting sponsors! Every year we have such a great response for this program and we couldn't do it without the generosity of so many community members!

LiHEAP

The Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) is currently in full swing, providing support to income-qualified households by assisting with a portion of their winter heating costs. We encourage families to take advantage of this opportunity and reach out to our Cherokee office to schedule an appointment, as applications are accepted only until April 30th. Our team is here to guide you through the application process and inform you about the necessary documentation to bring.

Head Start/Early Head Start

The Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Cherokee County are still accepting applications. Head Start is a free, federally-funded program for preschool children in income-eligible families. If you know of anyone that has children from birth to five years of age, Early Head Start would be a great option for them. Please call our office if you are interested in completing an application for preschool or home-based programs and we will be glad to help you.

For all program applications, please give us a call. We can tell you everything you need to bring in to complete an application. Our phone number in Cherokee is: 712-225-3322 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You can always reach us the other two days of the week in Le Mars at: 712-546-6603. We are currently working with two new software programs. We appreciate everyone’s patience as things are taking a bit longer to process.
